How to Discern the Voice of God

the voice of God

You may ask, how do I  discern the voice of God?    The bible says:  My sheep hear my voice and a stranger they will not follow.    As you read the Word of God, seek Him and learn to quiet your mind and spirit, you will begin to hear and discern God’s voice speaking, and leading you.

In the Old Testament, God spoke to His people through His Priests and Prophets.  Today, He speaks directly to us, if we would but hear Him.

Being able to discern the voice of God, is a matter of learning the ways in which God speaks to you.  Some people are more   sensitive to the Spirit then others.  It is also important not to compare yourself with others who seem to be able to hear God easily. Some people spend more time with the Lord, and some people have a greater ability to tune everything out.   God will speak to you in His time and in His own way.

Spending Time in His Presence

God is waiting for us to communicate with Him in payer.   Our lives are hyper-stimulated with meaningless activity that is constantly drowning out God’s voice.   This is why if we are to discern the voice of God, it is necessary for us to cultivate a habit of prayer and practice the presence of God.  We have to, as the bible says, study to be quiet. This quietness of should, is not easy to achieve at first.  This is where the practice comes in.  Find a quiet place somewhere in your environment as your meeting place with the Lord.   People worship, or approach God differently.  Some sing, some dance; some kneel; some pace the floor.

You can Discern the Voice of God

Have a Clear Conscience:    If you carry unforgiveness, resentment and unconfessed sin, will make it difficult to hear the voice of God. when we pray. Matthew 5:23, Matthew 5:24.  It is important to forgive others.

Have faith that God Loves you:  The love of God is eternal, all encompassing, and sacrificial. God’s son Jesus is the greatest proof of His love for us. John 3:16. God loves us, and desires to have us talk to Him and for us to hear His heart.

Be Still:  When you are done praying, be still.  Sit quietly and meditate on the love and grace of God and quietly worship.  As you are still, you will begin to get impression, scriptures, song, or some other things speaking to your heart.  This is how and when we can discerning the voice of God.

Pray with Expectation

Have faith that God hears you when you pray:   If you have never prayed before, you may feel foolish speaking to someone who obviously cannot be seen. Prayer is not a bunch of flowery speech; it is just talking to God, the way you would to anyone else. “God, you know I really feel I deserve this raise…” As you begin to pray, after a while, the Spirit of God will make Himself known to you, and you will feel His presence, a calming or peace comes over you. Don’t be afraid, continue to pray.  As you pray you will begin to discern the voice of God giving you answers to you requests.  Hebrews 11:6

God will answers our prayers. It is not always what we want to hear, but He will answer. Sometime when I have prayed and prayed and have seemingly not received an answer, I know the answer is to wait. Some things will seem to manifest immediately, and something takes more time.

Know God’s Promises:    When God is speaking, He will confirm it with His word.  He will not direct you contrary to the Word of God. Psalms 119:105, Psalms 119:11. After you have repented of your sins, cleared your conscience, after you have prayed, be still and listen to what you hear in your heart. When God speaks to us, it actually sounds like your inner voice, but speaks things that are heavenly.

How God Answers

God also answers our prayers through people or seeming coincidences; for example: You have been laid off your job for two months, you have no food, or money; you pray that the Lord would provide for your family,  A day or two later a friend comes to your door and tells you their freezer broke down, and they need to store some meat in your freezer and for the favor, they want to give you half. That is an answered prayer.

Another example: One evening you cannot sleep, and for some reason, you keep on thinking about your mom. The more you ignore the feeling, the stronger it becomes. You finally get up and go over to your moms to find her unconscious on the floor. This was God speaking to you by impression.

We Discern the Voice of God Differently

By practice you will learn to discern when the voice of God is speaking to you.  We are all individuals and they way God speaks to you, He may not speak to me.  He will use your personality sensitivities and environment to speak to you.  If you love to sing, God may speak to you through song.  If you love to dance, God may speak to you while your are worshiping Him in the dance.  If you are a pilot, He may speak to you in nautical terms.    As different as we are, are the ways the Father will speak to His children. So, my friend, know that the Father desires you to hear His voice, that He may instruct you, teach you and help you.  Be open to his voice an He will lead and guide you into all truth!

Spiritual Gifts

desire spiritual giftsSpiritual gifts,  are endowments, or abilities given by the Holy Spirit.   They are supernatural in nature, and are called grace gifts, because they are given by God, for the asking!  Do you want to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, or be used in God’s spiritual gifts?  Well, God wants you to as well.  He wants us to grow, beyond being a church member, to becoming ministers of the gospel.

We are Ministers

I do not mean necessarily standing in the pulpit, but to be active members of the body of Christ.  We are all called to the ministry, whether it is in your home town or abroad.  The Father also wants to give us, all the tools needed to fulfill our ministry, with excellence and completeness.  I Corinthians 12:1 1Co 12:1,  “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.”

Spiritual Gifts are for Today

I attended church my whole life, but did not know about the Baptism in the Holy Ghost, nor the spiritual gifts.  Many of us attended churches like this.  We just didn’t know, and  if it was taught, it taught that the gifts are not for today.  The gifts are for today, and the Lord wants to be a great witness of his power and love.

1Corinthians 13:8  Charity never faileth:  whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.  For we know in part, and we prophesy in part,  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

These verses talk about the power of love, that does not fail.  It also says, all will be done away with when Christ returns (that which is perfect).  It tells us, at that time, prophecies, tongues and prophecy will fail. But this will take place, “when that which is perfect is come.”  Jesus has not yet returned, and God’s gifts are still available to us and in operation today!   I challenge you to ask the Lord, to use you, in His spiritual gifts.

Growing a Relationship with God

Do you have a relationship with God? If you are a believer, God wants a relationship with you.   Our relationship does not begin and end with Salvation, but is an ongoing journey that develops relationship and intimacy!  How do you become intimate with someone?  Intimacy does not happen instantly, but it is a process of getting to know someone over time.  As you draw closer to the Lord, you will get to know His, voice, and His heart.  James 4::8

Relationship with God through Prayer

We cultivate intimacy, by  spending time in prayer with Him.  Psalm 63: 1 b – early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee… If we want to get close to God, we have to spend time in His presence.  Are you hungry to know God, do you want Him as a true friend, spend time with Him!  Not only in the morning, but in the afternoon, the evening, anytime He calls you to come away.

Relationship with God through His Word

The scripture tells us God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.  The best way build a relationship with God is thought the Bible.  The scripture will tell you everything you want to know about our Father.  It will show us what pleases and displeased God.  God’s Word will tell us everything that pertains to God and godliness!  2 Peter 1:3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Practice the Word

We grow in grace and the knowledge of the Father by When studying scripture, it is important to find a version that is closest to the original text and that you are comfortable reading and can understand.  The King James Bible is ready by many, but there are other modern version that many people read, such as the Amplified, American Standard, The New International, The Living and parallel bibles to choose from.

When you find one you like, make ti a daily practice to spend time in His Word.  When reading and studying the Bible, look for things to incorporate into your daily living, then do it!  Your relationship with God is your most valuable possession cultivate and treasure it!  Blessings!

Gifts of the Holy Spirit Explained

The gifts of the holy spirit have not passed away, but they are still in operation, in the Church today. Granted, not every church b9 gifts of the Holy Spiritbelieves this, nor does every church or ministry operate in spiritual gifts.  My attempt here, is to bring some clarity about the gifts, and their operation.  The Bible tells us, that upon the ascension of Jesus Christ, the gifts would descend from heaven.  Ephesians 4:8 .

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit baptism,  encompasses the Holy Spirit, the gifts and offices of the spirit. (Acts 1).  God does not pick,  and choose who can be Baptized in the Holy Spirit, or used in Spiritual Gifts.  Scripture admonishes us to, ” desire spiritual gifts,” and especially prophecy, that the body of Christ may be edified. I Corinthians 14:1.  (The  scriptures on the gifts of the spirit which can be found in 1 Corinthians chapter 12.)

If you are saved, and filled with the Holy Spirit, you can operate in spiritual gifts, as God allows. No one owns the gifts, or can say,  they have the gift of prophecy, but rather that they are used in the gift of prophecy.  The word of God, along with the gifts of the spirit, are the equipping of the believer, to do the work of the ministry.

They are part and parcel of the weapons of our warfare!  If you are not sure what your gifts are, ask God to show you!  If you know what your gifts are, do not hide them, but use them to be a blessing to the body of Christ or to minister to the unsaved.
